The PHOTONIS Hybrid Photo Diode provides an alternate technique for photon detection. The HPD amplifies an electron in a vacuum tube and bombards it onto a silicon diode. For each impact, a gain of between 2000 and 3000 is achieved. A diode array converts the signal to pixels.
Hybrid Photo Diodes can be focused by proximity or electrostatically. A fiber-optic entry window is available as an option, to allow the HPD to process signals from scintillating fibers without a signal loss due to the coupling in the connection.
PHOTONIS, in conjunction with CERN, designed a custom Hybrid Photo Diode which has been installed in the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) project for accelerated particle detection. The HPD is also capable of operation at cryogenic temperatures, making it the ideal tool for Liquid Argon and Xenon detection.

The PHOTONIS PLANACON photon detector provides a large active area within a unique square shape, allowing for superior large area imaging for tiled detector applications. Its micro-channel plate based design (25ìm Chevron MCP) provides excellent timing properties and a high degree of immunity to magnetic fields (B > 1 Tesla). The PLANACON is the photon detector of choice for sophisticated Ring Imaging Cherenkov detection in High Energy Physics experiments, for specialized medical imaging applications as well as innovative applications for Homeland Security.
The PLANACON detector is available in two versions, with either an 8x8 or 32x32 pixel anode which allows a multitude of application-specific read-out configurations. PHOTONIS can also provide custom engineered variants, e.g. with 10ìm Chevron MCPs for even better timing resolution in higher magnetic fields (B ~ 2 Tesla).
